We stand on the deck and we squint at the sea,
And we watch for a sail to appear.
We spot one and then the captain says “Arrr,”
And the men all give out a big cheer.

With sabers and pistols and cannons that fire,
Merchantmen don’t have a prayer.
So shiver me timbers and just give a shout,
Cuz who needs a fight that is fair.

But then in the evening we talk quite low,
Telling our stories and shedding some tears.
Singing sea shanties of home sweet home;
Singing of loves we have known.

We close up the gap and we raise the black flag,
Our boarding hooks ready to fly.
With knives in our teeth we jump on her deck,
And we see who’s the first one to die.

Some have reputations, and some are disgraces,
